Lights in the Firmament

“Lights in the Firmament”

MP3 Version: “Lights in the Firmament

Scripture Text: Genesis 1:14-25

Introduction:

A. Two weeks ago, as we continued our study in Gen. 1, we focused our attention on the first THREE days of creation.
1. Let’s review those three days for just a moment.
2. First of all, on day ONE God created “light.”
3. Gen. 1:3 says, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
4. On day TWO God created the “firmament,” or the atmosphere.
5. Gen. 1:7 says, “And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.”
6. On day THREE God did a couple of things.
7. First of all, He made the dry land to appear.
8. Gen. 1:9 says, “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.”
9. After God had made the dry land to appear, he created all plant life upon the earth.
10. Gen. 1:11 says, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”
11. Once again, the evolutionists are proven wrong.
12. Evolutionists teach that all life forms began in the ocean, however, according to Gen. 1:11, the first life forms began on dry land.

B. Now before we move on this morning, let me remind you once again that the six days of creation recorded in Gen. 1 are literal 24 hour days, NOT ages, as some would have us to believe.
1. This means that rather than millions, if not billions of years, the earth is actually only a few thousand years old.
2. All of the so-called evidence of an old earth can actually be explained by the world-wide flood that took place in Noah’s day.
3. Evolutionists, of course, don’t believe in Noah’s flood, just like they don’t believe in the rest of the Bible.

C. Now let’s take a look at the next three days of creation.
1. First of all, on day four, God created…

I. The Heavenly Bodies.

A. Notice again Vrs. 14 & 16 of our text, “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night;…And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”
1. The “two great lights,” of course, are referring to the sun and the moon.
2. As we all know, the sun is “the greater light” that rules “the day,” while the moon is “the lesser light” that rules “the night.”
3. The “stars,” of course, refer to all the other heavenly bodies that God created at the same time.

B. Now perhaps you are wondering how the plant life that God created on Day 3 was able to survive, if God didn’t create the sun until Day 4?
1. This question is easy to answer.
2. Since the days of creation are literal 24 hour days, the plants were without sunlight for LESS than 24 hours, and besides, there WAS light upon the earth.
3. Not sunlight, but light none the less.
4. Someone asked me once, “How can you have light without the sun?”
5. Let me remind you of what the Bible tells us in Rev. 22:5.
6. God is describing the New Jerusalem, which one day will come down from God out of heaven.
7. Notice what this verse says, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light:” (Rev. 22:5)
8. It says, “…for the Lord God giveth them light;”
9. And so, even though the sun was not created until the following day, the plants had PLENTY of light!

C. What was God’s purpose in creating the heavenly bodies?
1. Well, first and foremost, God created them “to give light upon the earth.”
2. Notice again Vrs. 17 of our text, “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,” (Gen. 1:17)
3. The sun, of course, not only gives us light, but that same light also gives us HEAT.
4. (Illus.- I was reading an article not too long about and it was talking about the position of the sun in relation to the earth [approximately 93 million miles). Did you realize that if the sun was just a little FURTHER AWAY from the earth, the earth and everything on it would freeze solid. Also, if the sun was just a little CLOSER to the earth, we would all become toast. Someone says, “Aren’t we lucky?” No, luck or chance has nothing to do with it. The sun is where it is by God’s design!)

D. There is another reason why God created the heavenly bodies.
1. Notice again Vrs. 14 of our text, “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:” (Gen. 1:14)
2. I don’t know about you, but I love the fact that we have four seasons.
3. In about 3 weeks, summer will officially begin.
4. Then comes the fall.
5. Then comes the winter.
6. Then comes the spring.
7. Did you realize that if God had not created the sun and positioned it where He did, we wouldn’t have our four seasons?
8. Thank God for the sun!

E. And so, on the fourth day of creation, God created the heavenly bodies. On the fifth day of creation, God created both…

II. The Sea Life and the Fowls of the Air.

A. First, notice the sea life.
1. Vrs. 20-21 our text says, “And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,…And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind,” (Gen. 1:21-22)
2. Notice that the whales that God created are referred to here as being “great,” which, no doubt, speaks of their size.
3. The largest whale, I am told, is the massive blue whale, which can reach a length of 110 feet and weigh as much as 400,000 pounds.
4. Let me share with you a few more amazing facts about the blue whale.
5. Did you know that a blue whale’s heart is as large as a small car?
6. A blue whale’s heartbeat can be detected from as far away as two miles.
7. A baby could actually crawl through the main arteries of a blue whale.
8. You could fit about 100 people in the mouth of a blue whale.
9. The tongue of a blue whale can weigh as a much as an elephant.
10. Blue whale calves can weigh as much as 6,000 pounds.
11. Of course, God created MORE than just whales.
12. It says that He created “every living creature that moveth.”

B. Apparently, at the same time, God created all the fowls of the air.
1. Notice again Vrs. 20 of our text, “…and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.” (Gen. 1:20)
2. While whales are the largest creatures in the sea, the smallest of all birds is the humming bird.
3. Let me share with you a few amazing facts about the humming bird.
4. Humming birds are the tiniest birds in the world, measuring only 3-5 inches.
5. While humming birds cannot smell, their hearing and eyesight are better than humans.
6. A humming bird’s heart beats at a rate of up to 1,260 times per minute.
7. A humming bird can rotate it’s wings in a circle, and is the only bird that can fly forwards, sideways, backwards, up, down, and can hover in mid air.
8. A humming bird’s wings can beat as fast as 200 times per second.
9. What an AMAZING creature!
10. Of course, it had an amazing Creator!

C. There is something else that I want you to notice here, before we move on to the fifth day of creation.
1. Not only did God create sea life and the fowls of the air, He also ordained that they would ONLY reproduce their own kind.
2. Notice again Vrs. 21 of our text, “And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” (Gen. 1:21)
3. Did you notice the words, “after their kind” and “after his kind.”
4. Once again we see that evolutionists are at odds with the Bible.
5. Evolutionists believe that one life form can evolve into a totally DIFFERENT life form.
6. The Bible, however, tells us that God ordained that the various life forms that He created upon this earth would ONLY reproduce their own kind.
7. Whales would reproduce whales and humming birds would reproduce humming birds.
8. Evolutionists, on the other hand, because they believe that all life began in the ocean, believe the whales somehow evolved into humming birds!

D. And so, on the fifth day of creation, God created the sea life, as well as the fowls of the air. Now, on the six day of creation, God created all…

III. Land Animals.

A. Notice again Vrs. 24-25 of our text, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” (Gen. 1:24-25)
1. This, of course, included the dinosaurs, which are now extinct.
2. Dinosaurs such as the Brontosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus.
3. Every now and then I get asked the question, “How could dinosaurs and man live on the earth at the same time? Wouldn’t the dinosaurs have eaten everyone?”
4. My first response is, “You’ve been watching too much “Jurassic Park.”
5. What a lot of people don’t realize is that in the beginning, all land animals were vegetarians, including the dinosaurs.
6. Notice what Gen. 1:30 says, “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.” (Gen. 1:30)
7. Now I realize that this flies in the face of what our evolutionist friends believe, but that’s what the Bible says.
8. By the way, let me say again that if we are going to know and understand the truth about creation, then we are going to have to decide whether to believe what man says or believe what God tells us in His Word.
9. Remember what Rom. 3:4 says, “… let God be true, but every man a liar;” (Rom. 3:4)

B. Not only were all dinosaurs originally vegetarians, we are told that after the flood, God instilled a fear of humans in all land animals, including dinosaurs.
1. Notice Gen. 9:1-2, “And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth,” (Gen. 9:1-2)
2. Which means that under normal circumstances, even if a dinosaur came in contact with a human, he would run away in fear.

C. What happened to the dinosaurs?
1. The answer is simple.
2. Like many other animal species, they became extinct.
3. You have to understand that the world AFTER the flood was very different from the world that existed BEFORE the flood.
4. The flood had devastated the world.
5. There’s no doubt that after the flood, it was a much more difficult world in which to survive.
6. Perhaps man had something to do with it, perhaps it was competition with other animal species, or perhaps it was because of the harsher post-flood environment, we really do not know.
7. This we do know, however, for some reason dinosaurs were unable to survive, and so they became extinct.

D. And so, on the sixth day of creation, God created all of the land animals.
1. Now this does NOT bring to an end the sixth day.
2. You see, God is not finished yet with creation.
3. There is one final act left, the creation of MAN.
4. We are not going to examine this final act until next Sunday, but let me give you a sneak preview.
5. Notice Gen. 1:26 (remember now, that this is still the sixth day), “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:” (Gen. 1:26)
6. Next Sunday, we will examine closely God’s final act of creation.

Conclusion:

A. What have we learned this morning? We’ve learned that on the…
1. Fourth day of creation, God created the HEAVENLY BODIES.
2. On the fifth day of creation, God created all SEA LIFE, as well as the FOWLS OF THE AIR.
3. On the sixth day of creation, God created all LAND ANIMALS.

B. I would like to conclude, this morning, by asking you a very personal question, “This God Who created everything in six literal 24-hour days, do you know this God? Do you have a personal relationship with Him?” If not, let me tell you how you can!
